• 3 Comfortable Spacious Tents
  • Amakhala Game Reserve
  • Exceptional Big Five viewing
  • Award winning & excellently rated

This classic 1920’s style expedition camp is modelled on the heyday of exploration, that golden era when adventure lay around every corner. Our intimate 6-bed camp offers you the opportunity to experience “Africa under canvas”, with three crisp white 1900’s style safari tents fitted out with military campaign style furnishings; the choice of pioneers, hunters and explorers of that time.

Guests at our expedition camp can enjoy the excitement of “Big 5” safaris on 2 of Eastern Cape’s premier game reserves in a malaria-free area. To experience the real nature of the African bush and enjoy some of the many wildlife encounters this area has to offer we run twice daily game drives.

Your hosts Riaan and Julie Brand are both experienced rangers and will do their upmost to ensure that you have a safari that you will never forget. As we operate in “Big 5” areas you have a chance of seeing elephant, white and black rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion as well as a variety of other game.

Guests booking for 3 nights or more have the opportunity to replace 1 of their game drives with a guided Wilderness Walk on the main Amakhala Game Reserve (in a ‘Big 5’ area – only for guests over the age of 16 years. Maximum 4 guests per walk), a guided birding walk, or a guided Bush Walk in a non-dangerous game area (up to 6 guests, any ages welcome).

    Amakhala Game Reserve

    “Unique experience!”

This quirky and unique setting makes for lots of special memories. Rhian and Julie are warm and welcoming and their commitment to making the camp an authentic experience shines through. This was our first experience of safari and having visited quartermains I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. The food is tasty and the facilities are clean with lots of little comforts added (such as hot water bottle in the bed). Lungi and Craig were our safari guides and were absolutely amazing. Their knowledge of the animals was impressive and their passion for protecting wildlife was inspiring.

    “The Best Safari Ever”

Everything was perfect and gone beyond over all my expectations about an “original safari”. You have the opportunity to take a shower like that, in the middle of the forest, go to sleep hearing the sounds of the birds and others small animals… was amazing. And the special thing are the drives, with friendly and smarts rangers who showed me every animal oh the camp, including a rare battle of two male giraffes, that were fighting for the love of the females. I really recommend this experience to everyone that love the wildlife.

“More than an excellent safari: an unforgettable experience”

Finally a place without WiFi, where one can make a sincere attempt to connect with nature. In May the nights are seriously cold so bring warm clothes, a beanie and gloves for the early game drive. Anything else is taken care of.
When you go out with a ranger who is as passionate about what he does as Craig and Lungi, you are in for a real treat, and you know it. Thank you for sharing that and thank you, Sam, for taking wonderful care of us from the kitchen, even though I am a bit difficult with food. What an amazing experience!

“Number one recommendation for South Africa”

One of the best travel experiences of my life. Great safaris, excellent food, wonderful people and a tent that makes you feel like Quatermain himself- AWESOME! You get game drives on both the Amakhala and the Shamwari reserve, get to see amazing wild animals up close and return to freshly cooked, delicious food and a roomy, comfortable and safe tent underneath an unforgettable night sky!
